From 8 Apr 2003, written on a tiny scroll and given to my Persian teacher, whose house I lived in before joining the Army:


The other day I took my Persian dictionary from my bag,
replacing it with Teach Yourself Arabic.

I must leave
the honey-sweetness of your home
and feed myself instead
with strong, goaty milk
in some faraway field.
